Bolton gardens vary more than most. Near the centre there are terraced yards with room for little more than a bin store and a bench. Out around Heaton and along Chorley New Road there are large period gardens with old walls and mature trees. On the western and northern edges, towards the West Pennine Moors, wind and rain decide which materials will last. We plan each job around that, starting with the ground and the weather it has to face.

Bolton has a lot of Victorian and Edwardian terraces, with small yards behind and often no side access, so materials come through a back gate or along a ginnel. The larger houses in Heaton and along Chorley New Road have bigger, older gardens where tree roots, old walls and changes in level all need care. Newer estates around Westhoughton and Horwich tend to have smaller plots, often with turf laid on thin soil. Up towards Egerton, Harwood and the moors, gardens catch more wind and rain, so we lean towards fencing, patios and decking that are built to cope with it.
