Wooden and Composite Decking Services

Choose a natural timber deck or low-maintenance composite boards. Each page explains how we build it and what to expect.

Choosing Boards for Your Manchester Garden

Wooden vs Composite Decking

Timber decking, in softwood or hardwood, has a natural feel and usually costs less to buy. It needs a clean and a fresh coat of oil or stain every so often to protect it and keep it looking good.

Composite boards are made to look like wood but need far less upkeep. They cost more at the start, but there's no staining, and they resist fading, rot and splinters.

Both need the same thing underneath: a level, well-fixed frame on firm footings, with space for air to move. That part of the job doesn't change, whichever board you pick.

The Advantages of Composite Decking in Manchester

Low Maintenance

No sanding, staining or oiling. A wash down now and then keeps it clean.

Fade and Stain Resistant

Boards are made to resist fading, staining, mould and mildew, which helps in damp, shaded gardens.

No Splinters or Rot

Composite won't splinter underfoot or rot like timber, so it suits bare feet, children and pets.

Looks Like Real Wood

A wide range of colours and finishes, from traditional timber tones to contemporary greys.

Works in Many Settings

Garden decks, hot tub surrounds, balconies and commercial spaces such as cafes and bars.

What Affects the Cost of Decking

We quote each deck after a free visit, because the frame and groundwork vary as much as the boards. These are the main factors:

  • The size and shape of the deck
  • Wooden or composite boards, and the range chosen
  • How high the deck sits and how much the ground slopes
  • Steps, edging and fascia boards
  • Ground preparation and access to the garden

How we carry out the work

How We Build a Garden Deck

No pressure at any stage, and nothing is booked until you have the price in writing.

Design and Set Out

We agree the size, height and shape with you, then mark out the deck and check levels across the area.

Prepare the Ground

The area is cleared and levelled, a weed membrane goes down and footings are set so the frame has firm support.

Build the Frame

Treated joists are fixed level, at spacings that suit the boards, with room left underneath for air to circulate.

Lay Boards and Finish

Boards are fixed with even gaps for drainage and movement, then any steps and fascias are fitted and the site is cleared.

Garden Decking Questions

Is wooden or composite decking better?

Neither is better for everyone. Timber is cheaper to buy and has a natural look but needs regular upkeep; composite costs more but needs very little maintenance. We'll help you weigh it up at the quote visit.

Can you build decking on a sloping garden?

Yes, decking is one of the best ways to deal with a slope. The frame is built up on footings to create a flat platform, and steps can lead down to the lawn or patio.

Will a deck get slippery?

Any outdoor surface can get slippery when it is wet and shaded. Laying boards with drainage gaps, keeping the deck clean and choosing a grooved or textured board all help, and a sunny, airy position helps most of all.

Can you remove an old deck?

Yes. We can take up an old deck, check the ground and build on fresh footings, reusing anything that's still sound. The waste is taken away.

Do you build decks for businesses?

Yes. We work for commercial clients as well as homeowners, including outdoor seating areas for cafes, bars and other venues.
