Middleton sits on the northern edge of the city, with the River Irk running through it. Its housing tells two stories. Alkrington has rows of 1930s semis with long gardens and room for a drive, while Langley is a large post-war estate with smaller, simpler plots. Around Hopwood and Thornham the town opens out into fields. Fencing, lawns and artificial grass are the jobs we hear about most here, alongside drives and patios.

Middleton's homes are a mix of older terraces near the centre, the 1930s semis of Alkrington and the post-war houses of Langley and Boarshaw. Alkrington gardens tend to be long and narrow, with space at the front for a drive if the layout is right. Langley plots are generally smaller, so fences and low walls do a lot to give a garden shape and privacy. Lawns here can stay wet through the winter, which is why we prepare and level the ground carefully before turfing, and why artificial grass is a common choice for families with children and dogs.
