Wigan's homes reflect its history. Terraced streets near the centre, former mining villages such as Hindley, Ince and Aspull, and newer estates around Standish all bring different gardens. Many have uneven or sloping ground, and plenty of new-build plots come with thin soil. That is why decking, which creates level space over uneven ground, is so popular here.

Wigan's housing mixes Victorian terraces near the centre, the brick cottages of former mining villages, interwar and post-war semis, and a lot of newer estates on the edges of town. Terraced yards are small, with access through the house or a back gate. Some older gardens have settled or uneven ground, so we check levels carefully before building anything. Newer estates tend to have thin topsoil over compacted ground, which is hard on lawns. Decking and well-prepared turf solve a lot of these problems, while drives and patios need a solid base and a fall that clears the rain.
