City gardens bring their own puzzles. Many are compact, and terrace yards often have no side access at all. Edwardian semis have more room but older boundaries and tired lawns. Rented houses need surfaces that look smart and take little looking after, and cafes and bars want outdoor seating that copes with heavy use. We plan around all of that, and we can fold hedge cutting, tree pruning and garden clearance into the same job.

Manchester's housing is mostly Victorian and Edwardian terraces and semis, with interwar estates further out in places like Burnage and Blackley. Terraced houses in Rusholme, Levenshulme and Gorton often have a small back yard with a gate onto an alley and no side access, so everything is carried through by hand. Edwardian semis in Withington and Whalley Range have longer gardens, often shaded by mature trees and old walls. Many houses near the universities are let to students, and their landlords want hard-wearing outdoor space that needs little upkeep. Space and light are the usual limits, so patios, decking and artificial grass do a lot of the work.
