Rochdale sits on the edge of the Pennines. To the north and east, around Littleborough and Hollingworth Lake, the ground climbs and the weather turns wetter and windier. Much of the older housing is stone terraces, and many plots slope. That shapes the work: fences have to stand up to the wind, drives need to shed water, and gardens often need levelling before they can be used. Fencing, drives and garden makeovers are what Rochdale asks us for most.

Rochdale's older streets are lined with stone and brick terraces, many with small yards and steep back steps. Around Norden and Bamford, homes are larger with bigger, greener gardens, often bounded by old walls and hedges. Up towards Littleborough and Wardle, plots slope, the ground can stay wet for much of the year and gardens take the full force of the weather off the moors. On those sites we plan drainage, retaining walls and terraced levels before anything else. In wetter spots we often suggest drives, patios and lawns built to shed water, and heavier fencing on strong concrete posts.
