Indian sandstone and natural stone patios

Sandstone brings warmth and character that manufactured paving can't quite match. Indian sandstone is the most popular choice, with riven slabs in buff, grey, autumn and mixed tones, or sawn slabs for a crisper look. We also lay other sandstones, including British stone, where you want a more traditional feel.

Natural stone needs laying with care. Slabs vary in thickness and shade, so we blend packs as we go, prime the back of each slab and bed it on a full mortar bed. That avoids the hollow spots and rocking slabs that come from dot-and-dab laying.

Sandstone finishes to choose from

Riven Indian sandstone

Split along its natural layers for a textured, slightly uneven face. Good grip underfoot and a classic, rustic look.

Sawn and smooth sandstone

Cut to a flat face with crisp edges for a cleaner, more modern finish. Joints can be tighter, which suits contemporary gardens.

Calibrated or hand-cut slabs

Calibrated slabs are a consistent thickness, which helps keep the surface level. Hand-cut slabs vary more, so the bedding depth is adjusted slab by slab.

Other natural sandstones

British and other sandstones offer different tones and textures. We will explain how each one weathers before you decide.

How we carry out the work

How we lay a sandstone patio

No pressure at any stage, and nothing is booked until you have the price in writing.

Plan and set levels

We agree the layout and laying pattern, then set string lines for level and a gentle fall away from the house.

Excavate and build the base

The area is dug out to depth and a stone sub-base is laid and compacted in layers so it will not settle.

Full-bed laying

Each slab is primed on the back and tapped down onto a full mortar bed, with slabs drawn from different packs for an even colour mix.

Point and clean

Joints are filled with mortar or a jointing compound, then the surface is cleaned off before we hand the patio over.

Sandstone patio questions

Does sandstone need sealing?

Sealing is not essential. Some people seal sandstone to make cleaning easier and reduce staining, while others prefer it to weather naturally. We will explain the trade-offs so you can decide.

Why does sandstone change colour when it rains?

Sandstone is porous, so it darkens when wet and lightens again as it dries. That is normal and part of its natural character.

Is riven sandstone slippery?

Riven sandstone has a textured surface with decent grip. Any paving can turn slippery if moss and algae build up in shady spots, so an occasional clean keeps it safe underfoot.

Will my sandstone patio look exactly like the sample?

Not exactly, because it is a natural material and every batch varies. That is why we blend from several packs as we lay, so the finished patio has an even mix of tones.
