Resin bound drives laid by a local team

A resin bound driveway is a mix of dried natural aggregate and clear resin, trowelled by hand into a smooth, seamless surface. Water drains straight through it, there are no loose stones to kick about, and it suits both modern and traditional houses.

Resin is a thin wearing layer, so it relies completely on the base beneath it. We either lay it over sound existing tarmac or concrete, or dig out and build a new base first.

What is the difference between resin bound and resin bonded?

Resin bound

Stone is fully mixed with resin and trowelled smooth. It is permeable and has no loose stones, which is why we recommend it for drives.

Resin bonded

Resin is spread on the base and loose stone scattered over it. It has a gravelly texture but is not permeable and can shed stones over time.

Choosing a blend

Aggregates come in many natural colours. We bring samples so you can see them against your brickwork in daylight.

Why choose Nice & Tidy

Why choose us for a resin bound drive

Most resin failures come down to a poor base or rushed mixing. We prepare properly and only lay in suitable weather.

Honest base survey

If your old surface is not sound enough, we tell you rather than resin over the problem.

Weather-aware laying

Resin needs dry conditions, so we plan the laying day around the forecast.

Careful mixing

Measured batches give a consistent colour and strength across the drive.

What affects the cost of a resin drive

Whether the existing surface can be used is the biggest single factor, which is why we survey before we quote.

How we carry out the work

How we lay a resin bound driveway

No pressure at any stage, and nothing is booked until you have the price in writing.

Check the base

We test the existing tarmac or concrete for cracks, movement and drainage, or dig out where it is not suitable.

Prepare and edge

A new base is laid where needed, edging fixed, and covers, doors and walls protected.

Mix and trowel

Aggregate and resin are mixed in measured batches and trowelled to an even depth across the whole area.

Cure and finish

The surface is left to cure, which depends on the temperature, and we tell you when it is ready to walk and drive on.

Resin driveway questions

Can resin go over my old tarmac?

Often, yes, if the tarmac is sound, well drained and not breaking up or sinking. Cracks and soft spots will show through resin, so we check carefully first and only recommend overlaying when it is suitable.

Does a resin bound driveway need planning permission?

Resin bound surfaces are permeable when laid on a permeable base, which usually means they meet the front garden drainage rules without planning permission. Your council can confirm for your property.

Can resin be laid in winter?

Resin needs dry weather and is slower to cure in the cold, so we only lay on suitable days. Groundwork and base preparation can often go ahead in less settled weather.

How do I look after a resin driveway?

Regular sweeping and an occasional gentle wash keep it clean and draining well. Avoid leaving oil spills or sharp, heavy point loads such as skip feet directly on the surface.
