Local Manchester Block Drive Contractors

Block paving is still one of the most popular driveway finishes in Greater Manchester, and for good reason. Laid well, it carries cars without fuss, looks smart for years and can be lifted and relaid in patches if it ever needs attention.

We are a family-run team based in Failsworth. We dig out, build the sub-base, set concrete-haunched edging, then lay, cut, sand and compact the blocks ourselves.

Why block paving works on a family drive

Benefits of Block Paving in Manchester

Individual blocks flex with small ground movement instead of cracking, so a block drive copes well with the weight of cars turning on it every day.

If a utility company needs to dig, or a patch gets oil stained, the affected blocks can be lifted and relaid with the same paving. Choose from a wide range of colours, textures and laying patterns, and add a border to frame the drive.

Block paving patterns and finishes

Herringbone

Blocks laid at an angle interlock tightly, which makes this the strongest pattern for drives that take regular traffic.

Basketweave

Pairs of blocks laid at right angles for a traditional look that suits older terraces and cottages.

Stretcher bond

Rows laid like brickwork, a clean, simple pattern that suits narrow or straight drives.

Tumbled and textured blocks

Softened edges and a weathered face give a more relaxed, aged finish than crisp flat-top blocks.

Why choose Nice & Tidy

Why Choose Us For Your New Manchester Driveway?

A block drive is only as good as what is under it. We take the time over excavation, sub-base and edging so the paving stays level and tight.

Proper sub-base

Compacted in layers to suit your ground, so the drive does not dip where the car stands.

Solid edge restraint

Haunched edging holds the blocks in place and keeps the joints tight.

Neat cutting

Clean cuts around drains, steps and borders are what make a block drive look finished.

Family-run and insured

A local, fully insured firm that leaves the site tidy at the end of every day.

How we carry out the work

How we lay a block paving driveway

No pressure at any stage, and nothing is booked until you have the price in writing.

Excavate

We remove the old surface and soil to the depth needed for the sub-base, bedding sand and blocks.

Build the sub-base

Crushed stone is laid in layers and compacted with a plate or roller, with falls set to carry water away from the house.

Set the edging

Edging blocks or kerbs are bedded and haunched in concrete so the paving cannot creep outwards.

Lay, sand and compact

Blocks go down on screeded sand, are cut neatly at the edges, then kiln-dried sand is brushed in and the surface compacted.

Block paving driveway questions

Why do some block drives sink or go uneven?

Usually because the sub-base was too thin, poorly compacted or laid on soft ground, or because the edging was not fixed properly. We dig out to a suitable depth, compact the base in layers and haunch the edging in concrete to avoid this.

Do weeds grow through block paving?

Weeds mostly grow from seeds that land in the sand joints, rather than coming up from below. Keeping the joints topped up with sand and an occasional sweep keeps them down, and a clean and re-sand brings an older drive back.

Is block paving permeable?

Standard block paving is not fully permeable, so we set falls towards a drain, channel or garden area. Permeable blocks are also available and can help meet the front garden drainage rules.

Can you match paving I already have?

We will try to source the same or a close match for paths or extensions to an existing drive. Older blocks fade over time, so new paving may look brighter at first.
