Local Manchester Fitters of Fresh Lawn Turf

A new turf lawn is only as good as the soil it sits on. Much of Greater Manchester is on heavy, wet clay, so we spend most of our time on preparation: clearing, levelling, improving the soil and getting the drainage right before a single roll goes down.

We supply and lay fresh natural turf for new lawns, garden makeovers and new-build plots, and we give you clear advice on watering and mowing so it roots in well.

Manchester Turf for Lawn Repairs & Patching

Not every lawn needs replacing. Where an area has been worn thin by pets, play or a shady corner, or spoiled by moss and weeds, we can cut out the damaged section and lay new turf in its place.

We prepare the patch to the same level as the lawn around it, so the new turf knits in without a ridge or a dip. It looks a touch brighter at first and blends in as it grows.

Free Turf & Landscaping Design Ideas

The shape of a lawn changes how a garden feels. At the free visit we can suggest curves, mowing edges and borders, and how the lawn links to a patio or path.

If part of the garden stays wet or heavily shaded, we'll tell you honestly whether turf will thrive there, and suggest alternatives such as artificial grass or paving where it won't.

Pricing

What Affects the Price of New Turf

We price turfing after a free visit, as the ground preparation varies from garden to garden. These are the main factors:

  • The area of lawn to be turfed
  • How much clearing and digging is needed first
  • Topsoil needed to level and improve the ground
  • The type and quality of turf
  • Access to the garden and removal of waste

How we carry out the work

How We Lay a New Turf Lawn

No pressure at any stage, and nothing is booked until you have the price in writing.

Clear the Ground

Old grass, weeds, roots and stones are removed so nothing competes with the new turf.

Level and Improve

The soil is dug over, topped up with topsoil where needed, then firmed and raked to an even level so water runs off rather than pooling.

Lay the Turf

Rolls are laid in a staggered pattern like brickwork and butted tightly together, working off boards so the prepared bed isn't marked.

Water and Aftercare

The new lawn is watered thoroughly and the edges trimmed, and we explain how to water it and when to make the first cut.

Turf and Lawn Questions

How soon can I walk on new turf?

Keep foot traffic to a minimum for the first few weeks while the roots grow into the soil. Walking on it to water is fine. As a rule of thumb, once you can't lift a corner, it has rooted.

How often should I water new turf?

In dry or warm weather, water daily for the first couple of weeks, enough to soak through to the soil below. Water less as it roots, and never let new turf dry out and shrink at the joins.

When should I first mow it?

Once the grass has grown a little and the turf has rooted, typically after two or three weeks, mow with the blades set high. Lower the height gradually over the next few cuts.

Can turf be laid at any time of year?

Turf can be laid for much of the year, but spring and autumn are usually best because the ground is moist and mild. We avoid frozen or waterlogged ground and very hot, dry spells.

Should I choose turf or artificial grass?

Turf gives a natural, living lawn that needs mowing and care; artificial grass stays green with very little upkeep. In heavily shaded or wet spots, artificial grass often copes better. We'll advise on both at the free visit.
