Removing trees safely in Greater Manchester gardens

A tree may need to come down because it has died, is too close to the house, is lifting a drive or wall, or has simply outgrown the garden. Whatever the reason, felling needs planning so the tree comes down where it should.

Most gardens in Manchester do not have room to drop a tree in one piece. We usually take it down in sections from the top, lowering each piece in a controlled way so roofs, fences, greenhouses and borders are not damaged.

Before we start, we check with the council whether the tree is protected, and we check it for nesting birds.

Options for the stump

Once the tree is down, there are a few ways to deal with what is left. The right choice depends on what you want to do with the ground.

Cut low and left

The stump is cut close to ground level and left in place. It is the simplest option where the area will be planted around or covered.

Ground out

The stump is ground down below the surface so the area can be turfed or planted over. Larger roots further out are usually left to rot naturally.

Dug out

Where a patio, path or shed base is going in, the stump and main roots can be dug out so they do not rot and leave a hollow under the new surface.

Pricing

What affects the cost of felling a tree

We price felling after seeing the tree, because height alone does not tell you how difficult it is. The visit and written quote are free.

  • The height, spread and type of tree
  • Whether it must come down in sections
  • What is underneath, such as roofs, sheds or cables
  • Which stump option you choose
  • Access for removing logs and branches

How we carry out the work

How we fell a tree

No pressure at any stage, and nothing is booked until you have the price in writing.

Check the tree is not protected

We confirm with your local council whether a Tree Preservation Order or conservation area applies, and wait for any required consent before any cutting.

Plan the take-down

We look at what sits under and around the tree and decide whether it can be felled in one or needs taking down in sections.

Fell in controlled sections

Branches and then the main stem are cut and lowered piece by piece, with the drop zone kept clear and nearby structures protected.

Deal with the stump and clear up

The stump is treated as agreed, logs and brash are taken away, and the ground is raked so the garden is ready to use.

Tree felling questions

How do I know if my tree has a Tree Preservation Order?

Your local council keeps a record of protected trees and conservation areas. We check this for you before any work, and if consent is needed we will not start until it has been given.

Can you fell a tree during nesting season?

Nesting birds are protected by law, so we check the tree before cutting. If there is an active nest, the work waits until the young have left. Where possible it is easier to plan felling for autumn or winter.

Can a tree close to my house be removed safely?

Yes. Trees near buildings are taken down in sections, with each piece lowered in a controlled way rather than dropped, so the house, guttering and roof are kept clear.

Can I keep the logs?

Of course. Let us know at the quote stage and we will cut them to a size you can handle and stack them where you want them. Anything you do not want we take away.
